Effective coaching techniques which coaches can adopt when interacting with their clients are:

  • Coaches should ensure expectations are communicated clearly to clients and that clients clearly understand the actions and behaviours that have been jointly agreed with their coach this is probably one of the most important coaching techniques.

Some other effective coaching techniques are as follows:

  • Coaches should be open with clients regarding their thoughts and opinions and should conduct themselves with integrity and genuineness at all times.

Some other techniques commonly used by coaches which are considered to be key coaching skills are:

  • Coaches should set measurable goals with their clients so that both the coach and client can accurately monitor their progress and determine whether they have met their goals or not.

  • Coaches should create a process for monitoring and evaluating the clients progress to ensure they are making progress towards their agreed goals and courses of action.

Some other effective coaching skills and are:

  • Coaches should provide continual feedback to ensure effective communication and mutual understanding is achieved between themselves and their clients.

Many styles of coaching can be used to assist clients in achieving their goals. However, some of the most effective coaching styles are as follows:

  • Aiming for one goal/objective.
  • Active listening.
  • Providing constructive feedback.
  • Beginning with a positive attitude.

Some effective coaching models and frameworks are:

  1. GROW model.
  2. FUEL model.

The GROW model is an effective framework which can be used within both coaching and mentoring. The GROW acronym stands for Goal, current Reality, Options and Way forward. The GROW model involves facilitating the client to move from their current situation to their preferred situation, which is often their stated goal.

The FUEL model is a 4 step model, which involves the following:

1. Framing the conversation.

2. Understand the current situation

3. Explore the desired state.

4. Lay out a successful plan.

These coaching methods and styles are considered by many to be effective coaching techniques which can enable coaches to facilitate their clients in achieving their goals and preferred situations.
