What is Executive Coaching?

Executive coaching can be defined as a professional helping relationship between a coach and a client. The client will often hold a senior management or another high level position within an organisation. The aim of the coach is, often, to enhance the client's managerial effectiveness and performance. The coach does not directly instruct the client, but rather supports and encourages the client to reflect, examine and explore their intentions, goals and actions within their particular workplace. This is carried out through a process of dialogue, open-ended questioning and exploration with the client. The purpose of this dialogue is to help the client reflect upon and examine their actions, decisions and intentions, regarding a situation.

A client will often seek out this type of coach when they are experiencing problems or difficulties in achieving their personal goals or the goals of their department or organisation. The coach will use various behavioural techniques and approaches with the client to guide them from their current situation towards meeting their intended goals, i.e. their preferred situation. The coach will also apply problem management and goal-setting techniques with the client to guide them towards achieving their expressed and intended outcomes and will hold the client accountable for meeting these agreed outcomes/goals. The time frame for this type of coaching is often a minimum of 6 months to 1 year.
